Why I Run Three Compost Bins

February 2, 2026 · Row & Reel

A single compost pile is a science project. Three bins is infrastructure. The rule is simple: scraps and shredded leaves go into the newest bin until it is full, then I stop feeding it and start the next.

The bin that has been sitting six months gets turned once and screened into raised beds. Nothing fancy — a hardware-cloth screen stretched over two sawhorses does the job in an afternoon.

My neighbors think I am eccentric until April, when I hand them a shovel of black gold and they ask for the schema.
